How good are my chances for landing a federal job?

What are my chances of getting a more money as a male nurse or at least landing a good job.?

  • I am starting classes for my CNA and planning to go for LVN then RN, but i am starting out late at the age of 50. I am also very fit at 6,2 and 235 lbs.

  • Answer:

You're not going to make more money because you're male, and what does your size have to do with anything?

You size as many has said is irrelevant. If it was suggested that you can help lift because you are a male RN vs a feamle RN you would have a quite viable lawsuit. Why shoould a female be employed, it heavy-lifting is a requirement? It also makes the assumption, erringly that a male can automatically lift more than a female, which is not always the case. The glass escalator, in theory, is just that. Most studies have found that a primary reason that men have moved more rapidly into supervision in nursing was that they were available for the supervisory positions when females took maternity leave, or in many cases left to follow their spouses to new jobs. It is less of a sociological factor in the workplace, than in the American Homes. The typical family in the US is traditionally male dominate, so the male job takes precedence, even when the female has the higher position. Females take the time off to be with children, or take care of elderly parents. Also men are not usually content in long term care positions, so they work in the acute care areas, which have fewer nurses, thus more recognition, they also seek to move into supervision and apply for opeinings more often. Since the Nursing profession remains at this time 93% female, (though that statistic is shifting rapidly) females still have the highest percentage of suervisory positions, and the Chief Nurse Executives at most health care facilities are female. While the facilities will deny this in the hiring process, since the CEO and CFO of the hospitals are usually male, as well as a large percentage of the Medical Directors, it is in the best interest of the facilities to hire a female into a female dominated exectutive position.

You don't make more money because you are a man. Sorry, but that would be illegal. And how fit you are means nothing as well. Hiring someone (or not hiring them) based on their physical fitness would also be discrimination. Anyone capable of performing the job's essential duties and that can pass a very basic physical exam, regardless of gender, height, weight, muscle mass, etc., is equally qualified to be a nurse.

RN is a great way to go -regardless of gender. BSN is even better. skip LVN.

because you're starting out late you should look into getting your RN as quickly as possible. no need to go through extra steps. although experience is key.
