Can one get financial aid for online school specifically career step for medical billing?

  • Lookiing to take an online college at career step.com for medical billing and coding. I cannot afford it but I am thinking since I am so low income maybe I could find financial aid ...show more

  • Answer:

Do NOT go to a private, for-profit school, especially one which "offers" financial aid - most of them are scams, or overpriced, or poor training, or worst - NO JOBS upon graduation. Do NOT consider this online "institution"! Contact your local community college and your state's community college/junior college system. It will be much cheaper, you usually can go to school part-time or full-time evenings while working full-time and end up with no debt! And the programs are usually far better. The local community colleges usually have good relationships with local hospitals and other employers, good reputations, and better outplacement and career guidance people than the for-profit schools. Ask your local hospitals' personnel office if they recruit grads from your local community college & what they think of it. Chances are that the CC is about the only place they'll recruit from for those particular job categories because they know it the best, respect it, have grads already working, etc.

Please realize that there aren't supposed to be too many jobs for the medical claims biller or coder (or medical assistant) despite what those private $$ tech schools proclaim. With the numerous training programs that are available, the fields are saturated. Regarding medical billing, a lot of companies are outsourcing to Asia/India leaving the jobs more scarce. With coding, a person usually needs a couple of years experience doing coding tasks, certification(s) in the field and preferably completion of an accredited coding program to possibly find work. Please also steer clear of those online, for-profit schools (some have 'bricks and mortar' buildings and may be 'accredited') such a penn foster, career step, everest, ITT tech, university of phoenix, argosy, devry, strayer, walden, sanford brown, kaplan, capella, stratford career, ashworth and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit' (and course credits may not transfer): http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search. Take a program at the community college, not a specialty school. It will be less expensive and you will be dealt with more fairly.

don't be fooled, community colleges don't even offer jobs after graduation and my college here which is LCC in OR they tell you after you graduate you still have to go through careerstep to get hired so don't be foolish and go to college THAT is the scan my friend! my friend is taking the transcription course at college which told him he needs to do careerstep when done with school. You are confused because it is the local community colleges who force classes you don't even need then tell you graduation does you nothing! I say take the course I am a nurse taking it and it s worth every penny

I would advise you to take a look at both career schools and community college. You want to make sure the program is right for you. Community colleges are cheaper but the programs are not as focused. Use a site like better than school(dot)com to find some schools in your area. If you request some info someone will call you directly from the school. Always want to do some research before you commit. I hope it works out.
