I agree with you. EU is economically in a big mess. Culturally, each EU country has its own unique way of traditions, life styles, etc. So, nothing special about being an EU country.

No I don’t think that Turkey needs the EU! You don’t want to risk your financial assets for them! You can’t be able to bail them out, it’s like the US trying to bail China and Russia at the same time out of their debt (if they even have any). I suggest just staying where you are, in Anatolia! If you have to increase your financial values then go with Russia and China as trading partners and get a bunch of casinos and shops built in those countries and vise-versa! If Russians and Chinese decide to live in Turkey, don’t be afraid, they are there to live there and work, not to force Christianity or atheism onto you!

First i'd like to state that i'm from the US and i dont know much about Turkey and its foriegn relations, but I think that Turkey is looking at the EU for protection purposes. I mean, with the tensions in Syria spilling over the border, Turkey wants to make sure it has allies that would back them if anything were to happen. Also, i'm not completely sure about this, but i dont think Turkey is really in a safe position geographically. With Greece bording the North who are having so many violent riots, Syria from the south with its current civil war, Iraq to the south with its unstable government and weak police forces, and Iran to the east with its strong military and is always taking heat from western governments for trying to increase its military power. I think Turkey is looking for safety in numbers to prevent any aggression towards them.

First of all, being European and being a citizen of an EU state are not the same thing. Second, it's my understanding that hard-liner religious people in Turkey want Turkey to be in the EU, simply because they feel they would have greater religious freedom within the EU than they have currently, and less secularism. Personally I'm not sure if that would be a good thing. Everything that goes down comes back up again. Look at Iceland, look at Ireland. Look at the US, even. I don't think Turkey will ever become an EU member state, too many Turks are against it - which is their choice. And if it stays out, it is far more likely to remain a cheap but very nice holiday destination for many.
