I recently got into a local 2 year nursing program. I'm not unintelligent when it comes to math, but it's far from my favorite subject and I really do not like or truly ...show more

Answer:
it's nothing really what you think. Nothing along the lines of Calculus or Algebra from High school days. Math comes in when you think medication. There's usually a medication test you have to pass in order to administer meds (at least at my University) Math also comes in when you do IVs Later on in your nursing program (maybe not for you, but my program is the 4 year RN program) So, we had statistic courses. Nothing to crazy, I've done way worse so it was sorta a breeze with practice

Mathphobia shouldn't deter you from doing well in Nursing school. I too have had life-long trouble with math but the drug conversion equations on most dosage calulations tests either in school or to start a nursing job are simple multiplication most of the time. Like with anything, you must practice to become better at it. I've been a nurse for 10 years but would often find sites online to prepare myself for dosage tests (like i said, at the beginning of every nursing job you will have one). Here is a good site: http://www.nursesaregreat.com/articles/drugcal.htm Nowadays, eMar and electric pumps will do the math automatically for you but it is still a need to know skill. Goodluck!

it is not hard at all. you can use a calculator (most likely supplied for you so you can't cheat (we can't even wear long sleeves for exams or tests) and possibly a conversion sheet on tests. I would say the math is one of the easiest parts of nursing school, it should be the least of your worries right now. Like the previous answerer said the hardest part is those equations--my pda has a program that will do it for me, lol but we can't use those on exams. Just know how to set up the problem and fill in the numbers. If anyone reading this response can help me out with my ridiculously long care plan email me.
