  • Answer:

Although many people refer to medical billing and coding as if it were one job function, billing and coding really are two distinct careers. Here is a brief description of the tasks and functions associated with each job and give you some things to think about to determine which path you want to pursue.

Yes, there is a difference. Coding is condensing and converting medical / clinical documents into numeric and universal "codes". These codes are then entered in claims and submitted to insurances/payers. Based on these "codes" the reimbursement is made to the providers/physicians. A coder does this work of converting the medical information into numeric coded reports. Billing is different. A biller's job starts after a coder completes his coding. Biller enters the coding information into designated forms and puts a claim amount ($$) and submits the claim to payer. Biller might do few other works like following up, modification of claim etc., based on an organization's structure. Http://www.supercoder.com/

Medical coding describes the procedure. 105.03 could mean an office visit. Medical billing shows the cost of the office visit.

Medical coders assign industry standard codes to the tests, diagnoses, treatments, and procedures that were recorded in the patient’s medical file during an office visit or hospital stay. Let me give you an example. Say a patient comes into a dr office for a visit. A code will be applied to the procedures that the dr performed, supplies used, hours nurses attended the patient, and the diagnosis that resulted. The medical coder will have to apply the correct code for each procedure that was performed, supplies used, hours, and the final diagnosis. Medical billers will then take the codes and apply dollar amounts to each and prepare the bill. The bill may be submitted to insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and the patient. Most companies have combined these jobs into one- medical coding and billing. This career is one of the few in the health care industry that has no hands-on interaction with patients. You will interact with patients and insurance companies when there are billing questions. So if you want to get into this career, I would suggest getting training in both coding and billing. That way you are prepared for coding jobs, billing jobs, and coding and billing jobs. Makes you more marketable. I suggest getting education that is AHIMA approved. AHIMA is a medical coding association that approves training that meets their criteria. Going through an AHIMA approved school let's you know that the school is a good one. Working from home isn't too common in this career. AviaCode is a good place to start looking for an at home job in medical coding. They are based out of Salt Lake City I think. There are a few more out there but it isn't the norm- FYI.
