Is Nursing a good career choice in this day and age?

  • I am starting my undergrad degree in Childrens nursing in September :) I want to specialise in neonatal nursing after that. Is this a good choice?

Nursing is a rewarding and hard profession. It is a brilliant choice as NHS are screaming out for new nurses! l am hopefully training to be one in 2014. l want to make a difference in other peoples' lives.

Nursing is a very good profession. The problem is most employers want a RN who has experience, so new grads are having a problem getting a job with little or no experience. Those who go through a program designed for new grads to get experience (internship...you get paid as well, not as much as actual hired RNs, different than clinicals you get trhough college), do tend to have a higher chance at getting hired because they obtained experience through the program (not all hospitals offer this kind of program). These types of programs are hard to get into. They go by your GPA as well as other factors. Programs tend to be very competitive. If you have a BSN with no previous experience, you do have a higher chance at getting hired than someone with an ADN with no experience. Many employers nowadays prefer Bachelor degreess. Some will hire someone with an Associate degree if the person is willing to (and follows through with it) get a Bachelors degree.
