Does it bother you when people want to be a nurse, but don't really belong in Nursing School?

I've worked my behind off for several years to finally get where I am. I love my job as a Nurse. But it really gets me when people think they can just take a class and walk out ...show more

Answer:
Yes and no. I agree that maybe they need to find another field of study. Keep in mind, we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Chem is something I don't have a talent for (then again I've had really crappy teachers when it came to chem) and I'll never be a wound care nurse (something about that creeps me out), but I've done plenty of dirty work as a CNA. There must be something out there that you can't handle.

I kind of agree with the answer previous to mine - I probably would have worded it better, but she makes a really good point. We are not all super human nurses with indefinite knowledge about every single aspect of math, chemistry (what part of nursing is it exactly that you have to be adept in chemistry?!?! To an extent maybe acid-base imbalances... but I suck at chemistry and understand acid-base just fine). To become a good nurse, you have to have a huge caring heart for all our patients - and really, also for the other nurses you're working or are in school with. I've been in clinical on some units in the hospital where you can tell that all the nurses are out for themselves, are overworked, underpaid, and really just don't give a crud about each other. They also are the ones that snap at nursing students, as if they've already forgotten what nursing school is like. All I'm saying.. is instead of being annoyed with the nurse who has a weakness in nursing math, or chemistry, or ANYthing... why would you not just offer to spend 5 minutes explaining it to her in laymans terms? Seems like it would be a lot more effective. After all, wouldn't you want her future patients to be safe? If you see another nurse has a weakness, it would be really awesome if you just helped her.

It does bother me. Like another person said though, we all do have strengths and weaknesses and I have worried if poor math skills,at least quick math skills would be a problem. I really don't like when people didn't work hard through school and decide to come back and just be a nurse off the fly, like it's so easy. It seems like this profession isn't regarded as very difficult but I think it takes a lot to be a nurse and I'm not even there yet. That's why you're a nurse though, you can listen to people's silly questions and respond politely and efficiently with great people skills and not get angry (:

Right now you sound as a show off, been an RN for the past 10yrs some have weakness for math/chemistry and some piss off patients, blood, annoying bosses. What is your point?

At my college, the only math a nursing student must complete is College Algebra. That is your basic high school math class. They do not have to complete chemistry either, but they do have to do microbiology which is similar. We are an accredited university and the students earn a BSN in four years. If you are funny about blood and needles, there is always allied health. I am queasy around needles so I picked ultrasonography. However, you have to move up to Physics in math. Still no chemistry though. There are different areas for nursing. They people bugging you will still have to 'work their butts off' as you and I are doing, but there are SO MANY areas in this line of work, everyone who really wants to be there will find a comfortable place. It still requires a lot of work to get there, though.

No! This is a free society! Nurses will be eliminated either by themselves or by their supervisors if they don't belong there
