    The short answer is that it depends on the program that you are seeking entry to. I'm currently in my second year of nursing school, and the selection process was based on really 2 things: 1. had you completed the majority of pre-requisite courses (A&P, Microbiology, etc.) with at least a C grade, and 2. How did you do on the entrance examination for the program? Really, the second one was the deciding factor. In my school, that exam was from the Psychological Services Bureau (PSB), and it tested your math, reading, vocabulary, and science knowledge abilities. Basically, you took the exam, and then a rating list was generated, and the 40 best scores were offered positions in the class. Really, that was the only thing that they based the decision on, which I personally do not agree with, but they didn't ask my opinion. Other schools and nursing programs may have other requirements, and what I would tell you to do is to thoroughly research any program that you are thinking about, and find out exactly how they make their selections for the entering class. If they use an entry test like mine did, find out what it tests (I found out, and then used a nursing entry exam prep book to prepare for it). As for GPA, it depends on the school. Mine didn't care as long as your prerequisites had at least a C grade. Others might have different requirements. However, I do think that a 3.0 is respectable, so I don't think that it would hurt your chances. Again, research where you want to go and find out how they make their selections, and then work to prepare for that to maximize your chances. Good luck.

It is very difficult. They need more nurses, but a big part of that problem is the limited amount of spaces in the nursing programs. They turn away qualified applicants because so many people want to get in. It will be the same at a community college or 4 year college, they both get more qualified applicants than spaces. I would contact the program you are looking to get into and see what they accept. Their minimum grades may be way lower than what the people getting accepted. They may say a C in anatomy is the minimum, but you won't get in with that low of a grade in such an important course. That is a decent GPA, so you probably won't have too much trouble. Just talk to them to be sure that you are up to the real standard compared to the other applicants and not just the written policies. It would be smart to apply to several programs.

It depends on the program that you are wanting to get into. When my daughter was admitted into a BSN program, she had a 3.9 GPA. All other students I know that have been admitted into a BSN program have had GPAs of 3.8 or higher. The reason for this is that every school of nursing gets literally hundreds of applicants for possibly 80 -100 openings each year. When going through the applicants, they of course require all the pre-reqs to be finished and after all requirements are met, with the applicants still left , they go from the very highest GPA (over a 4.0) and keep going down till all positions are filled. Usually they don't get much lower then a 3.6 or 3.7. They do this because a BSn program is so challenging, that the higher GPA you have going in, the higher change of a successful graduation from the program and passing the NCLEX. With you having a 3.0 you may have a difficult time getting accepted . A 3.0 is a very good GPA, but may not get you into the program you are looking at. Check into the school you are wanting to go to - ask the counselors what a reasonable expectation is with what you've accomplished so far - they may be more then your GPA that they will look at. If you aren't accepted the first year you apply, keep working on non-nursing requirements, get your GPA higher and keep applying - many of us had to do that and it is so worth it in the end.
