Diploma or Degree in Nursing? Which one is better?

  • Do you get the same qualification from the diploma and the degree? If both the diploma and degree lead to registratrion with the nursing and midwfery council, then why do ...show more

  • Answer:

If you have 20 or 30 working years ahead of you, go for the degree. The diploma will eventually be phased out just like the Enrolled Nurse in UK (or in USA, the LPN) Nowadays everyone wants to be a manager, and patient contact is left to the tea ladies! I did my training in the US and then came to work in England. The US nursing education is much more academic than the British, but the British is more practical. Both countries seem to be going the same way now. (I'm glad I'm retired!) If you are looking for advancement in a nursing career, don't even think about a diploma - go straight for the degree. In the end you will be sitting at a desk filling in forms. If you really want to be a real nurse, go into the high-dependency areas such as ICU or midwifery.

The degree is a higher qualification and, in the UK, is due to become a requirement for a qualified nurse. It is often possible to study further to 'top up' a diploma to degree level provided you took all the right options and core subjects.

In the US, a lot of states are phasing out the Diploma programs. You either have to have an Associate Degree or Bachelor Degree to start out. Both of those degrees will make you eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam. So do not waste your time going through the Diploma program unless you are going for LPN/ LVN instead of RN. LPN/LVN programs only need a certificate.

Get a degree. Better chance of a job or better job with it. Nursing is not "hell." I am a CNA and going for my RN degree and I love every step of the way, it's work but it's worth it. Plus if you go for RN you can work at a number of places! nursing home, hospital (OB/GYN, ICU, emergency room) or be a traveling nurse, or home health, or a doctors office!!!

I'm in Nursing. My suggestion? Steer clear! I wish I would have chosen a different major. It's been nothing short of hell and there simply is TOO much abuse. I'm not trying to be negative or discouraging...truly I am not. I wish someone would have advised me the way I am advising you. Pick a major where you can keep your pride and integrity. Social Work would even be nice. Good Luck hun!
