Is the Computer Science degree really helpful?

What's more helpful, Calc 2 or Linear algebra in Computer Science degree?

  • I'm a computer science major and I only can take one if I'm to graduate on time so help me decide! Here are the descriptions: Linear algebra: "Introduces and explores some of the major concepts of matrix analysis through solving significant real world problem" Calc 2: Techniques of integration, infinite sequences and series, polar coordinates, and parametric curves.

    Take both.  It is almost impossible for a computer scientist to take too much math.  Both of these courses are relevant.  But if you could only take one, then I'd take Linear Algebra and then mourn a little that you were not able to take both ;-)

Definitely linear algebra. I mean depending on what you want to do .. but you can definitely enjoy a rich and varied career as a software engineer and never need to use basic calculus much less advanced calculus. Obviously, there are fields of software engineering that involve needing to know how to take a line integral and so forth but you would generally have to seek those fields out. Same can almost be said of linear algebra unless you want to do anything that involves graphics, particularly 3D graphics. In that domain, having a solid understanding of linear algebra is definitely helpful if not a prerequisite.
