Chemical engineer or biomedical engineer as career choice?

What's a better career choice - Systems Engineer or Software Engineer?

  • Why?

  • Answer:

I think there are many more jobs available to people who write the software, than people who design the systems that the software runs on. However, I also believe that people who limit their world view to the "engineering" of all this, also drastically limit their job opportunities. We live in a world where the engineers know how to make systems that do not fail, that last for decades, but that's not what the public wants. The public wants to get the cheapest possible, then complain about the consequences, but not do anything about it. So we have electronic voting for which security is a joke, systems that crash all over the place all the time, an epidemic of spam malware etc. Engineers know how to make systems that do not have any of that stuff, but no one wants to hire them, because no one cares any more about the concept of making mission critical systems that are secure from trouble.

It depends on your passion. Both are great career choice. It just depends whether you'll like to be dealing with systems or software. Both can be well paid yet can be stressfull depending your level of experience & company environment.

Software Engineers get the money, but Systems Engineers get the girls. Take your pick. .
