Does the college you go to really matter when you apply for jobs in the field of computer science?

  • Answer:

I have about 140 people that work for me in IT and they do a variety of things. I or any of my peers at other businesses or agencies don't care where you received your degree from. Rather we only care that it was in a field that relates to the job description and it was from an accredited university. I care, we care, more about your core skill set and ability to do something specific like JAVA programming, system engineering (creating patches, writing script), Information Assurance and the such. CompSci is nice but it's general and not focused in a specific area. People who work for me also have a varying list of degrees not related to IT but again, it's more important that they have a skill set then a piece of paper. Your friends were treated the same because they didn't listen to those of us that actually do the hiring and have been doing IT for decades. If you go to college, learn how to do something. If you want a job that people sit around and talk theory all day, get a degree in Mathematics.

Your GPA and the name of the university on your diploma become completely irrelevant on your first day on the job. The reason people pay the big bucks for the Ivy League schools isn't for the education of the curriculum, it's for the alumni network. I've been told that many companies dislike Ivy League grads because they tend to be arrogant and have a superiority complex.

Propaganda

Pretty much - in the work world, it's what you can do, not where you came from or what your GPA was then. If you're an Ivy League graduate with a stellar GPA and boatloads of extracurriculars and do nothing on the job, you're beyond useless.
