What field has a better job outlook?

What field of Engineering has the best job outlook for a College Grad?

  • I know having a degree in Engineering will have you more likely to land a job than say Philosophy but what field of engineering has the best employment outlook for a college grad

  • Answer:

Being an Electrical Engineer myself and never having to worry about a job for 34 years, I would say Electrical, Computer, or Software Engineering. As far as I can tell as long as people do reasonably well in college all the Engineering degrees usually end up with jobs. Oh Biomedical Engineering is doing well also.

If you are taking admission in any i.i.t or n.i.t , or any reputed private college which is going to place you after your degree, then dont bother for any field. but if you are taking admission in any medium or low reputed college, i would advice you to go for civil, mechanical, or electrical and electronics(E.E.E)

Civil, Industrial, and Environmental engineers will always be needed. Especially considering these fields will expand as populations and cities grow. Petroleum engineers are also needed, but no one knows how the industry will be in 30-40 years. This is a gamble, but currently, it's one of the best engineering jobs in terms of employment outlook. Ditto to nuclear engineering, but I'd imagine it'd be more secure a few decades down the line. Biomedical engineering is expanding ridiculously fast, and for a similar reason to civil and environmental engineering. More people = more health problems, especially considering the baby boomers are retiring now. Aerospace engineering is another field, since militaries will always need them, and plane innovations need to occur. The spaceflight portion of AE is a huge question mark, but there's potential employment there as well. Mechanical Engineering is a very, very, very safe route. This field has the potential to translate into quite a few other engineering fields like Aerospace and Electrical. Obviously there are others, but my advice would be to think about what kind of things you like and focus on that specific field. I'd rather make 80k/yr in an engineering field I'm interested in than 90k/yr working in a field I have no interest in.
