  • Answer:

CIS is among the lowest-paid Computing Majors. Some CIS grads who manage systems and networks for large corporation are very well paid, but many grads end up maintaining a few laptops. In approximate order of prestige and earning power, highest to lowest: Computer Engineering Software Engineering Computer Science Software Engineering Technology Computer Engineering Technology Computer Industrial Technology (4yr. ATMAE-accredited) IT/IS/CIS/MIS (All the above except for MIS and Computer Industrial Technology should be ABET accredited). Check out San Jose State's excellent ATMAE-accredited degree in Computer Electronics & Network Technology.

It can be a good job, but you will have to continually have to go to school for the rest of your working career to learn new programs and new innovations in the industry.

B.

Yes, it's a good degree. Expect to be able to go into any industry with a degree in comp sci, because of the analytical skills you develop/ Salary can vary. Small startups don't pay that well, top tier investment banks pay a LOT (I will start on $68k with a $32k signing bonus next August. This will go up yearly/on promotion, and doesn't include performance bonus etc). You can earns $1000s a day by contracting once you become a specialist.

A computer science degree is an extremely good job to have however you shouldn't pick it because it will pay well. It is a hard degree and you have to have a nac for programming and understand how it works, or atleast want to understand how systems work. If you don't you will have a miserable time in college and will flunk out. If you do enjoy computers you can expect to make between 60 - 80 thousand as a starting salary (ca ching). Also (because I'm bias) you should look into computer engineering. It is all about how systems work and how to migrate computer programs on to hardware and get the software to run on the hardware. Its a very challenging and rewarding degree that opens many many doors for you. Plus you learn how to make a robot that can make you drinks and take out your trash and stuff, which is awesome. I am a computer engineering freshmen and I have already build a device that will open my back door by remote control. (So my damn dogs will stop waking me up at 4 am. Lolz). Computer Engineers can make roughly the same as computer science majors however we have far more opportunity in the business world. And that is where the truly big salary's are. If you want to know more go to your local college's open house and ask the computer science / engineering professors what they think of each major.
