I don't know that I can provide you with a ton of in-depth information, but I can make some helpful suggestions based on vicarious experiences. My partner is somewhere along those lines, but a few years removed. In the process of building a resume for public health, I would look--as a 3rd year student--at doing a lot of volunteering. Specifically, I would look at some hospice care facilities and focus on their statistics and profiling jobs. Also, I would contact my state/local department of health and ask if they have any intern possibilities. Often, but not always, people can be caught up in their careers. This, sadly, may mean that they forget to reach out to the new up and comers. However, a casual inquiry with the local branch may trigger someone's initiative to "create a spot." Of course, the best case would be that they already have a program in place. Finally, I would contact the CDC and perhaps RTI.org and ask one of their experts how they became an expert. I hope this helps!
