  It really depends on what your major is. There are a lot of Federal jobs in your area, of course, but each agency has its own needs. If you were an Engineering major, the Corps of Engineers would be a good choice; a Poli-Sci or History major would be most useful in the Intel agencies, etc. If you're looking for great experience for your resume and can afford to go without the cash, though, seek out NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations). These are non-profits that lobby in Washington and often work with federal agencies toward a common goal. They do have real clout and can provide you with good training. American Rivers is one example, but there are many of them. Also, many government offices hire temps from the civilian workforce to fill in for permanent personnel who are on temporary duty abroad. Temp Agencies often fill those slots, and if you do well, there is a fair chance you will be picked up on down the road. But my BEST advice is to find someone, anyone, who is in Federal service and pick their brain, because the government is just like the civilian workforce in that it's often who you know that matters most. There are plenty of unadvertised opportunities out there, and Government workers network like crazy, so if you make one or two contacts you'll probably find an inroad somewhere. Good luck!
