When applying for a government job, how can you follow up?

There is not a hiring manager like there is with most companies and I was wondering how I could follow up to try to make sure I'm considered.

I know the job site for federal government jobs has a status update on resumes...like it tells you where the agency is in the process. Maybe that will give you some guidance?
