How do you create a Non-Profit Organization at the least costly?

Can I create a non-profit organization?

  • Hi, I'm a freshman in high school, and I decided that I wanted to create a sort of community service organization. My idea is this: collect unwanted clothing from the students of ...show more

  • Answer:

Collecting unwanted clothing from students and giving it to Goodwill or homeless shelters is a great community service project. You do not have to create a non-profit organization to do it. (You're too young -- you have to be an adult -- to sign the legal forms to create a non-profit.) Besides, do you really want to spend hours filling out forms for the IRS? Your best bet is to contact Goodwill or a homeless shelter to see if you can work with them to conduct the project. They can provide you with the donation receipts and will take care of getting the clothes to the people who need them most. Hope this helps. Good luck. P.S. The first time you do this project, start small, perhaps with just your school, so you can see how it works and can develop an efficient system that can be expanded in the future.

Hey, I love your spirit! So young and so ready to give back especially to the homeless, that's awesome. Don't let these people tell you NO! You can do anything you want I would simply ask a parent to help you out or an adult that shares your same beliefs if you want to go the whole legitimate expensive way. Call the state attorney general in your state and ask questions! If you feel your idea is unique then go ahead and start it...non profits simply are forms of protection, fund raising, tax exemptions. If you truly want to change the homeless situation in your area NO ONE WILL TELL YOU A THING! Form your own school club, community group and do what you have to do, no one is gonna stop a young kid from changing the world, there's no non profit police patrolling out there. If you're doing this all alone then more power to you. Just don't do anything a real non profit does. Do not fund raise do not claim tax exemptions and if you want to ask people for donations of clothes simply tell them what you are doing and ask them to give you unwanted household items. BY the time you're 18 you will know what has worked and what hasn't. Believe me this will look extremely well on a college application...good luck! I support you all the way, most of the organizations now have forgotten why they were started in the first place. All of their money is occupied in corporate and operating expenses. 1 tip i can give you...Keep it simple

No you cannot. You are not 18, your plans are already being carried out by numerous nonprofits such as Good Will, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and Churches
