You need to produce ID to fill out the I-9 form which requires a state photo ID (your driver license) and then your original social security card OR an official birth certificate. A copy of your birth certificate is not going to work and in a lot of cases your actual original birth certificate won't work either. This is becasue your birth certificate has to have a raised seal on it and a lot of old ones don't. Go to your local health department and get a birth certificate. It cost $15 here and probably similar where you live. It is good to have anyway because you will need it to renew your drivers license.

Most places would rather have the original and they will make the copy themselves. What state are you in? You should have a local "Vital Records" office where you can apply for a duplicate birth certificate and get it on the spot. I live in Pennsylvania, and we have a State Building in the city. You can go there with a check or money order for $10, and your id, and you will leave with your original birth certificate. I'm sure your state has that service as well.

A copy of your B.C. will be just fine.
