Is it easy to find a job after doing a marketing degree?

A woman I used to work with had a law degree and a relevant job in high-tech contract negotiation. She fancied a change and transferred into marketing at a senior level within the organisation. A couple of years later, I needed help with a marketing issue related to a course of study I was taking so I consulted her. It soon became clear she was talking rubbish so I challenged her. She said she always made it up as she went along and no one ever challenged her, not even her colleagues or bosses who were supposed to be qualified and experienced in marketing. That may not be typical but highlights the difference in approach between the 'flexibility' of marketing and the precision of law. She has returned to law where her particular skills add real value. What I am suggesting is that easier is not always best and that solid skills will always have a marketplace and a career path. How many CEOs or Chairmen or MPs or Senators have a marketing background? How many have a background in law? Most people qualified in law are not solicitors and barristers (though they may have been at some point in their careers). They are in industry, making things happen and making sure that, when they do happen, they do so in the way everyone intended. Yes, I am biased, but think about it.

It is not easy to find any kind of job anywhere these days. However, since you have a long way to go, education-wise, things will be different by the time you finish law school or MBA or whatever. How will things be different? In what way different? Nobody knows. Things change and that's that. The only thing that is safe to predict is that, barring a population collapse, our world workforce glut of a billion people will increase (one billion more people needing/seeking jobs than jobs available). Your competitors are already born. With 7 billion on the planet and population increasing by a billion per decade, competition is baked in the cake. So, no way to predict the job market that far out. History does tell us that when everybody jumps on the bandwagon, the bandwagon breaks and dumps everyone in the mud. Do NOT go for what "everybody else" is going for! What do you like to do? What are your strengths? Your personality? Talents, abilities, interests, personality, character -- these are your keys to your good future. If you think this through carefully, put your head & heart together, you will find a career that makes you happy and successful on your terms.
