What jobs can I get when I'm 15?

  • I'm 15 right now, but I turn 16 this summer. I NEED a job. I was wondering what places would hire a 15 year old?

  • Answer:

Unfortunately, none. There is no place that will pay someone that young, 15 or 16, especially with the jobless rate and economy the way it is. People who need the job far more than you ever will. You're under 18, meaning you will always be able to get a roof under your head. There are more people than jobs who are vastly overqualified yet are forced to dig in trash cans hoping that the piece of chicken they found will only make them ill, not kill them. Think about the reasons you need a job. Now, imagine those reasons are ten times worse, you're starving, dying of thirst, gangs are trying to kill you and you've been stabbed twice today and beaten three times today, are trying to not get beaten again, but you can't do anything about it because you have no money and no way to get it because of the delays, wait times and sadly ironic application costs on unemployment benefits. The sad thing is that there are a bunch of people in situations like that who are trying to get the same job you do. If you get a job, it just means that someone worse off than you isn't. I suggest you worry about school for now and ride out the world until you've got enough college credit to get a job that somebody dying isn't applying for.

I've been working since I was about 15 , actually I was just about 14, and worked at a few jobs, cleaning up for a mechanic and learning to do simple auto-repairs. I HATED bussing tables and working at a restaurant / bar (You can't serve/work behind the bar unless you're 18/21, but you can clean dishes). Working in a convenience store / coffee shop while going to school, this was actually kinda cool because my co-workers were for the most part nice people, and working late nights afforded me time to do my job right , and still have plenty of time for studying, and then when I was a little older I got my first gig working in computers, at a helpdesk. From there it was pretty straightforward for me. Helpdesk gigs are great because most companies just want to "hire off the street" and train as you go, but even if you don't get formal training you REALLY will learn to deal with all kinds of people and learn how to troubleshoot problems - which is a hugely useful skill-set.

There are places that will hire at 15, but not many. You are going to have a better chance once you turn 16, as many fast food and retail companies will hire at that age. Call around to some local shops and ask.
