What is it like being a Manager?

What do you like in a manager?

  • I'm going to begin managing a small office soon, and I was wondering what employees like to see in their manager. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Skill. The manager should be as good or better at my job than I am. Understanding. A manager should know where their workforce is coming from and be flexible. Punish the people who take advantage of sick days but work with the people who need your help now and then. Drive. If the boss is not driven to succeed they are not likely to push their workforce to better themselves

I'm glad you asked this question! In my personal experience, I enjoy working with a manager that doesn't necessarily put themselves above the other workers, but works with them in a friendly manner to achieve their goal. If the goal isn't achieved, use constructive criticism and tell them everything they did right and praise them for it, tell them the things they did wrong without hurting their feelings but say that the mistake is "no biggie, just make sure its better next time" followed by a smile. A manager should be someone that the employees feel comfortable around, not necessarily hindered by. I'm sure you'll make a great manager since you've already gone out of your way to find out the best way to be one :)
