    Count UP towards the amount they gave you. If the bill is $25.50 and they gave you $30 do it this way: Give him 50 cents (this plus the 50 cents out of the 25.50 makes an even one dollar) and say to him "$26 dollars" - see you're counting UP to $30, starting with $25.50. Then give him 4 $1 dollar bills counting upwards to $30. So - 50 cents - say "$26" , then handing him the dollars one at a time say "27, 28, 29, 30" dollars.

The register will tell you the amount of change due but to count it back: 30 - 23.79 = 6.21 so get a five, a one, two dimes and a penny. Tell the customer 23.79 put the penny in their hand and say 23.80 put a dime in and say 23.90 put another dime in say 24 put a dollar in their hand and say 25 put the five in their hand and say 30. It will get much easier with practice. It is a lost art but it will keep you from making mistakes and from the customer coming back and saying you shorted them.

As long as you enter the correct amount of cash you are handed, the register will tell you the correct amount of change. You'll just need time to get quicker at knowing exactly which coins to grab and which bills to make the change. Take your time in the beginning so you don't make mistakes. Just smile at people and explain that you are still learning and apologize for being slow. Most folks will be okay with it. Good luck.
