How hard is it to find a job with a marketing degree?

Why can't I find a steady job when I have a college degree in Communcations/Marketing?

  • I graduated in 2002. I got laid off after 10 months with one marketing agency because they lost a major client. Then I had a job for a year where there was no room to professionally ...show more

As I read the answers before me, I think back to my past clients, similar in nature to you - young, college degrees, lack of stability in the job market. The one thing that sets you apart from your competitors is your image. Not simply your "look" but image extends to your interactions with your boss, your co-workers and even down to your personal life. Business in many aspects is like a elite club. Becoming part of that club is difficult but ultimately essential in developing a high end job in your given field. Ask yourself - what makes you known to your company? How is your presence impacting the company? Is your work the only item you contribute to the corporate image? Do clients have a significant impact with you? Do you have the ability to impact the outcome?

You need to research the company you are working for. Pick one that has been around for a long time, but needs fresh faces. Also pick one where you can find your own clients as well as picking up some they already have. For those skills you need to become a recruiter, as well as marketing. If you are bringing in new clients as well as keeping the old, you will not get fired. I have been a recruiter. The hours are long, but if you are working for a company you believe in, and marketing something you enjoy or believe in, you will never have to change jobs again.

You should know from your marketing background that if you throw enough (whatever) on the wall, some of it will stick. You need to do more contacts. Eventually one will stick. In the mean time, get to work doing something. You may find another career that is more fun and pays better.

Employers are now hiring not based on education or working experience... they will hire you for your attitude, the ease you have to make good relations, team work and how easy you adapt and learn new things. If unemployed, get yourself employed by You Company by selling, making, doing anything that can give you some experience, do voluntary work or get a job that you can build from that will teach you other skills you may need for the position you want. Good luck.

nothing....this is how that market is...you can check you magazines and newspapers in the area and hopefully find some work...but you might also think about teaching it if you cant get a job with it..even in Calif. it is rough to keep a job of this career choice...it is a very shakey market...you could however start your own...hope it helps and blessings on finding something.

You are limiting your options and opportunities. Maybe this field "isn't the one". Use your creativity to think outside the box, think of employers you have not yet considered. Maybe your skills might lend themselves to something else, not in marketing?
