Do you think someone that is shy should major in marketing/public relations?
-
I like both areas but I am a very shy person and I keep reading that to get a job in marketing/ public relations you need to be a very outgoing and creative person.

Answer:
Tanya, I'm a drama teacher and I've seen very shy people come out of their shell and be able to function effectively in front of groups of people. They may be terrified, but they learn how to show confidence. Most of them get over their shyness in my class. Take a drama or speech class. Learn how to step outside of your comfort zone in a safe environment. The feeling of control you have when you get past your own reservations is incredible.

It depends, because on the outside you may have to have this front where you're very bubbly, etc. but inside you're shy. Rita Hayworth is a good example of this.

Hi Tanya, First things first. What is it that you like most about these subjects? If it is the strategy, planning or creating ads and ad campaigns then your shyness will take care of itself in time. Dont let this get in your way. Besides, if you really are passionate about these fields, join an MBA program and make full use of the two years to do away with the shyness, which actually all of us have at some point of time and we give it away when our passion drives us to.

Shyness would be a drawback, but it can be overcome. If the field is otherwise attractive to you, go for it.

Its possible for them to loosen up, but they need to be able to have that customer communication to market and be involved in public relations. The more you interact with customers the more relaxed you will become with the positon, so GO for it!

You can overcome shyness. You need to find a group or a program in your area that can help. Even taking public speaking classes can help. The more you do it the more comfortable you will feel. The biggest thing that helped me with my shyness was when I found out that even the most confident seeming people are often freaking out on the inside when they have to speak in front of an audience...just remember people can only see whats happening on the outside so even if you feel shy inside no one will know.

I don't see why not. It'll help them be more confident. I'm a real shy person and I'm in the retail business. i find myself to be less shy not.

Go for it! Remember that public relations are the result of certain techniques and not natural techniques. It is a science.

the world is made up of all kinds of individuals - some outgoing, some backwards - go for it and do your best. If everyone was a loud mouth, we'd live in a very loud world.
