Gardening, like any other trade is a skilled job.Tydying up a garden on the other hand can be done with a little knowledge.Ask yourself this, do i want a garden that is full of colour all year round and you want your man to provide it for you? or do you just want someone to pop round once a week to cut your grass and take out a few weeds?. Your question is not an easy one to answer. If you have a lawn and you would like it to look like your local bowling green thus setting off the rest of your garden you need someone who really knows what he's about, because without doubt, good grass is the most difficult plant to grow well. (look around and see how many of your neibours lawns hit you in the eye as you walk past) not many i guess. The flowers look ok ,pity about the ropey grass and the weeds,am i right?. Good gardeners are dedicated people who love nature and their job,and will often work over their allotted time(without pay) just to make sure the job is finished and it looks good, its a matter of pride to him. Here are a few tips to help you find your man. 1.ask him to identify the plants and shrubs already in your garden. 2.ask him if and when your shrubs should be pruned. 3.ask him about fertilizers for your shubs, plants and lawn 4.ask him to show you how to set your mower to cut correctly You can check out the answers on your p.c,if hes a gardener he'll have no trouble answering your questions. if hes a cowboy out for a fast quid hes bound to fail the test, dont even consider him. If he comes through however respect his knowledge, dedication will come free, So what is a decent rate of pay?.Well. think of it this way, the man or lady, has a living to make ,bills to pay etc, compare his rate of pay to what you get, treat his knowledge with respect,if you want to pay peanuts you will get a monkey,as the saying goes.Negotiate a fair price, dont be a skinflint, neither party wants to be ripped off,and if you unearth a diamond, and they are out there.you wont regret it. Good Luck

My Mum gets charged £15 every time the gardener cuts the grass (every two weeks). It only takes him 10 mins. If I didn't live 400 miles away I would do it. And would punch him on the nose while I was at it.

7 pound per hour, but you might be able to do a deal with a retired gardener, and say a rate ie if lawns cut garden tidied then most retired gardens take pride in their work and will do more than they really need to, so try a day rate with a list of jobs.

I like this method. Hire him on the basis that his experience will determine his rate of pay. If you are happy with his work and trust him around your house, pay the man a honest days pay. 10 to 15 an hour

It all depends on the job, is it a weekly job or just a one off, we pay a retired man £7.50 per hour, he comes once a week for an afternoon, and he's really happy with that, he has other people he works for week day afternoon in the summer months

If his work is to a high standard then expect to pay a decent rate.
