That may have been try years ago. The first contacts were made of glass way back in 1887. Later, contacts were a rigid plastic. Today, they're quite soft and I don't think you'll be in any danger from a direct hit to the eye, at least not from the contact. You'll run more risk of infection, if anything, from general use.

It's safe. Just have your eye-drop and the solution bottle ready. It's even better if you could bring a pair of backup softlenses. It's really for the convenience, right? Just remember, sometimes dust do get its way to your eyes, not to mention your sweat ... so, if the question is "is it safe?" Yes, it's safe.

Hard lenses or soft? I've worn both and used to be very active in sports. The worst thing that ever happened with hard lenses was that they got knocked out. Soft lenses are both more comfortable and safer in this regard. Anyway, the risk of getting hit smack in the eye is minimal. Presumably you will block the ball, right?

as long as your dont poke yourself in the eye, (then youd have more problems than contacts) you should be fine!

its completely safe. My eye doctor said I can do sports and stuff and I do and nothing happens.I reccomend Softmed or Acuvue.

There is no option, no one brand of contacts is better (or not that i really know) I guess it could break hard contact lenses, so i wouldn't reccomend that. But htink about it, the only other option is glasses, and those could break and get glass in your skin and eyes
