Why can't video streaming sites gain traction like YouTube?
-
I'm cutting down all the porn sites because most of them are not legal. I'm also cutting down all the educational video sites because the only one left is coursera. Udacity hosts in youtube itself. Vimeo was not that cool despite the fact it actually provides good experience. Other sites are trying to base on livestreaming instead of video sharing/content generation ( JustinTV/ start up based TV channels/ usstream/livestream/general assembly). I'm cutting down all of the would be educational sites which serves a niche because they won't be able to beat it anyways except if it's based on tablets i think. how were the early days of youtube?

Answer:
YouTube has a huge advantage, and that's being owned by Google. Google was able to invest billions and billions over dollars into YouTube from 2006 till it finally became profitable in 2011. YouTube has a massive server park able to host the billions of videos uploaded. It has a dedicated team in dozens of countries, so you can get the YouTube-experience in your own language and culture. And of course, it uses the AdSense-network to make it profitable. Google's success is about convergence. They are offering a wide range of services and as such, they are able to connect the dots. YouTube integrates with Google+, AdSense, Analytics and Google's search engine. It can track everything its users do, and use it to offer better results for their advertising partners. And being the first video platform ever, it also has the most users. So yeah, YouTube has so many advantages that there's no way it will be caught. However, that's not to say other video platforms can't be successful. They just have to not be YouTube. http://Vimeo.com distinguishes itself because it's associated with creative professionals. http://Viddler.com is about business. And http://Blip.tv is a platform for wonderful webshows (they actually do quality checks and delete accounts that don't upload good quality). So you shouldn't compete with YouTube, but rather specialize and target a specific group of video producers. That's how you get traction nowadays. By the way... I'm actually in the process of creating an educational video platform myself, using Vimeo Pro as host. It's a great deal for power users such as ourselves :).
