Usually, it is not a good idea to induce vomiting. The reintroduction of certain poisons to the esophagus can cause more harm than good. In the case of food poisoning, it is best to rely on the body's natural response to the food as opposed to inducing vomiting. A combination of baking soda and water will probably not induce vomiting; it will, however, more than likely cause symptoms of nausea to dissipate. Syrup of Ipecac was commonly used years ago to induce vomiting but it is not very common anymore.

It's syrup of ipecac... Do be aware, from a first aid perspective, that inducing vomiting is not always the recommended course of action. For corrosives, throwing it up would do additional damage to the esophagus, etc, on top of the damage done while the substance went down to the stomach. You can call the poison control hotline to ask what to do in a specific poisoning situation. 1-800-222-1222

No you take baking soda with water is to settle your stomach, like drinking ginger ale or coke when you feel sick. Ickycac syrup induces vometning. But don't induce vomiting; go to the Doctors.

Never induce vomiting unless Poison Control tells you to do that. Some chemicals will cause more harm to the esophagus coming back up. In cases like these activated charcoal is used to absorb the poison in the body. Keep syrup of ipecac around the house just in case. ALWAYS call poison control or go to the emergency room first if this is a viable option. The U.S. center for poison control number is 1-800-222-1222
