What are the best British comedies?

Here in the U. S. many public TV stations show what we call "the British comedies." I really like Are You

  • Being Served, Keeping Up Appearances, and The Last of the Summer Wine. A question or two, please. Where was the Summer Wine program filmed? What part of the UK? Is the countryside ...show more

  • Answer:

LOL Last of the Summer Wine is filmed in Yorkshire - and yes, very typical of the UK. Mrs Bucket lives just up the road from me! In Solihull which is in Central England (The Midlands) and yes, it is a very expensive neighbourhood (more upper class than middle class)

Glad you like british comedies. Watch Doc Martin, As Time Goes By, and Faulty Towers which all play in the USA. Thinking of going to beautiful England, just remember it is very very expensive. Around $6.00 a litre of gas. It cost me $250.00 to fill a little Renault car about the size of a Micra which was $20.00 US

Glad you have enjoyed them. You get them for free but we have to pay for them! Most Americans I have spoken to have always been gobsmacked when I have told them we have to have a licence in the UK to own a television. If you watch TV and you don't have one, the authorities track you down and fine you (and lock you up in prison if you don't pay up!). The TV licence is over $250 a year. I am not joking. It's how the BBC is funded (without adverts). I recommend "One Foot In The Grave" if you can find it anywhere. Judging by the comedies you refer to, I think you would like it. In the UK, the main character, Victor Meldrew, has become synonymous with a grumpy old pensioner so much that the name has entered the national consciousness. He's not a monster though. Ultimately, he is a normal (slightly cantankerous) 60 year old frequently outraged by the ridiculous things that happen to him. It's comedy gold. The writing is superb.

Once again, you just listed some of my favoritres. I do watch them a lot. Oh, dear, I am not British though. I loved the Vicar of Dibley. Hyacinth is so determined to make herself royalty in her "middle class" neighborhood. I agree with you. She does live in middle class neighborhood. Yet, a nice place. It is just her relations who are absolute slime balls. Waiting on God is another funny one. It is a shame that we get the old shows. I loved to watch "Are you Being Served" and our PBS stations have to buy the series, so we get all the old ones.,

Wow those comedies are OLD! Summer Wine was filmed in Yorkshire (in the north). Appearances was filmed in Surrey (in the South). Hyacinth tries to be middle class, but the basis of the humour is that she is really from a working class background.

yorkshire, not typical, summer wine. Yes, middle close surburbia. Now sod off! lol

Last of the summerwine is filmed in Holmfirth

Jeanette

Oh, you are so American! Summer Wine is filmed in Yorkshire. Much of rural Yorkshire looks like that. Hyacinth Buckets neighbourhood is sort of upper working class, middle class wannabe.

Last of the Summer Wine was filmed in West Yorkshire. The countryside shown is typical to that particular area with many hills. Mrs Bucket believes that she is middle class but does love in a middle class area but really she isn't.

Holmfirth, Yorkshire, a really lovely spot! Yes, the scenery you see is typical of that part of the world. Hyacinth is a stereotypical middle - middle class Englander, with retentions of being upper middle class!
