What does everyone think about Stephen Colbert getting"The Late Show" instead of Craig Ferguson who'd previously been promised it?

It's well-known that Craig Ferguson had been promised "The Late Show" when David Letterman retired. And yet Stephen Colbert was named as the new host. I know that Craig ...show more

Answer:
Craig had a first refusal clause in his CBS contract. The network had to offer him the Late Show immediately following David's retirement announcement, which they did. Craig understood that if he took Dave's job, he'd have to move to New York, move into the Ed Sullivan theatre, dump Geoff for a real announcer, hire a band, and revamp his act. He wasn't willing to do that. I hope CBS lets him keep his job instead of replacing him with John Oliver.

Craig got millions of dollars for not getting the Late Show. He had it in his contract.

Dang, i wish Craig Ferguson got the job instead. Colbert is so bland and even annoying at times. I'm still on your side , Ferguson!

My outlook is simply this... Just as Letterman is more his own kinda guy, Leno was able to take on not so much Carson's spot (by any consideration!) but to almost generically have The Tonight Show become, well, just a standard after the news talkshow. Thus *allowing* Letterman to shine as the by-far better position and performer with all the trimmings. [Lots of us remain, btw, quite bitter that CBS never permitted Dave to carry on with Viewer Mail and a few other of his trademark things.] In the present day case, I believe--and certainly hope!--that a similar occurrence will ensue. Craig, when you get to know his show and all its in-joke schtick, is infinitely more personal with regard to his approach and delivery of humor over the politically-infested and near-caustic in demanding pitch we get from Colbert. Not that I don't have a rapport with Stephen's take, just that with Craig, geez, once his momentum sets in, you're at home with him, his humor AND it's a warm kind of very funny. See? *PLUS...is there anyone in all of history who can consistently fire-off a strong drenched sense of UK-based humor with such natural ease while so slyly serving it up in American-friendly near-simplicity?
