Answer:
Its convenient for their caregivers or them if they are independent to go to one place. But it isolates them from the community at large and the community from them. The intentions are good, but I would rather see their time spent doing the same things in the mainstream- if that choice were available, which it is often not because it is perceived as not needed because these programs exist. My son at 26 in theory needs this kind of place, but instead takes cooking and art classes at the community college with other adults. It took them awhile to get the idea of including him, but now they do without a problem. He also bike rides with a local bike club - nothing special about this club except that they welcome my son. Places such as this with the best of intentions segregate people that need community supports to be part of the community, not separate from it. Chiliswoman

Anything that might enhance their quality of life and provide some good experiences and social interaction would be a good thing.

I would be concerned whether the learning disabled person will be in a safe environment. Some learning disabled are violent while others are extremely meek. There are cases where one patient has attacked another. You also don't want to be paying for something when in essense they really don't teach the patients anything but instead just let them sit in a corner for hours. Is the staff educated with degrees related to dealing with learning disabled? Will staff abuse the learning disabled? Also does the person even want to attend? A lot of places supposedly there to help learning and developmentally disabled are fraud and abuse patients.
