Remember when it was safe to go trick or treating?

When my sister & I were younger, during the 1950's, our parents told us to stay within a certain radius of our home. My sister was older than me, as were her friends, & we felt safe ...show more

Answer:
In the 50's people were going around in costumes and robbing houses. I believe it was also one of the first examples of razors/needles showing up in candy and fruit. Times haven't changed, just the media saturation on the reporting of crimes have. You still need to behave in a safe and responsible manner and monitor kids appropriately.

Yes it is sad that things have gotten so bad folks have to watch their kids all the time. There are many sick people out there.

Where I live it's still safe. I live in a small mountain community of about 80 homes. Most kids who live within a radius of 25 miles come up here because this neighborhood is the only real "neighborhood" and they know we're expecting them. The majority of children live acres away from their neighbors so Halloween is huge. There are a few haunted houses some scary, some really frightening. It's a time to socialize and reconnect with neighbors. Last night over 126 trick-or-treaters. It's a blast.

Last night a 3 year old girl out with her 9 year old brother for trick-or-treating fell in the middle of a busy road trying to keep up with her brother, a car threw on brakes and swerved to miss her. It was so close, where were the parents? Years ago a man met trick-or-treaters at his door with a shot-gun, saying he would shoot if they didn't leave. The man had his porch light on as a welcoming sign to children. A mom called the police and the man was arrested. It could be really scary then as well as today.

I did not hear about that . . . Things were safer in the 50's , or so we thought. . . with technology, the world is getting smaller and we do hear more news now than we did back then. What a shame for that to have happened. . .

yes, this is a cruel world we live in, that is awful, i know , i was remembering back also, lastnight, my father, and mom always told me this story the year was 1952, they were married, and that halloween night, my mother said to dad wouldnt it be great if we dress up for halloween, and go to all your co workers houses, and then surprise your dad, soo they did, they dressed up like a man and a woman, she was a man and he was a woman, well they went and they ahd soomuch fun, and they were in there 30s, sooo, i tied it one year with my ex, and we disguised ourself soo scary, and we were too big, and a cop stopped us, soo that ended that

I read that story this morning. Unfotunately, this is really nothing new. I'm fortunate to live in a neighborhood where kids can go door to door on their own block and feel safe, but I wouldn't dare allow a child to go to a stranger's house these days, even if I was with them.

It is a sad world, Buick, where did you get your info about the needles etc back in the 50's? We were allowed to paint store windows with Halloween scenes and were given prizes for the best. We went out after dinner and stayed out until at least 8p.m.. We were allowed to soap up the store windows and have Halloween parades etc. I remember fun times back then, not shootings or robbing. The candy was safe too.

Nothing is the same as it was in the 50's. I read that article of the shooting and I can't recall hearing that type of thing happen on Halloween before. In the 70's the razor blades were found in apples and other stuff in candies. We only let the kids go to the people in the neighborhood. When I got involved in the PTA, we had a Halloween Carnival at our grade school. It was a big deal and all merchants donated what ever we needed, including one of those big theater popcorn poppers. Lots of games and they won candy of all types. We had a Chile Dinner and a silent auction to raise money for the school play ground. Prizes for best costume. Also had a Cake Walk. Winner's won a cake. Parent's made the cakes. This was an occasion for both parent's and kid's. We did this for the six years I was involved and I have heard they are still doing it. This eliminates trick or treat and they go home with a bag of treats and prizes. Good question. Deejay.
