    Rent, don't buy, a longboard in the neighborhood of 10 feet. Get used to it, get used to paddling and maneuvering. I bodyboard and surf and they're competely different. They're different like how golf and basketball are different. Go with a longboard and learn it first.

Since you body board already you probably have a good paddling stroke. Assuming that you do not use flippers. If you are a strong paddler and know how to pop up on your sponge or at least drop knee it then I would tell you to go with a fish. Get a 6'0 long x 20" wide step down short board or fish. As you progress you will start acquiring more and more boards and get a quiver going. A nice 6 foot fish will be something you can surf with all your life in small to medium sized mush that we get here in the summer. A fish will be easy to paddle and stable. You will not need to pump as much to generate speed as you would need to do on a performance board.
