What is a surfboard traction?

On your surfboard do you need to have both a traction pad and wax or can you have just one ?

  • New to surfboarding, about to get a used surfboard that is good for beginners. I have done alot of research but i'm still confused about this.

  • Answer:

u need both. but since ur starting out then its as simple as u need a longboard. no traction pads. just the board its leash wax and yourself. u dont need no lessons. i never took them and im perfectly fine. plus learning on ur own is cheaper and more cool. like u feel more accomplished. start with a longbaord tho. if u start with a shortboard ur obviously gonna do terrible with it and then you'll get fustrated and wanna quit. at least with the longboard you'll catch some small waves and you wll enjoy it more than sitting out there falling off every 10 seconds. Oh! and when you get a board factor in your height and weight. you want a board best suited for you. just talk to the dude at the shop about it.

Traction pads are for shorter boards. Where u really want your back foot to not move so you can make quick turns. Alot of people just use wax. I suggest just using wax since you are new and probably will be riding a long board. No longboard needs a traction pad. Just remember anyone can get out and surf. my dog doesn't no what a traction pad is but she still get out there
