What would be an ideal shortboard length?

What length shortboard should I buy? for surfing..?

  • I am 5'1'' and weigh about 100lbs. I'm athletic but really small and I just started learning how to surf. I want to know what length short board I should buy.

For the most part experienced surfers will choose boards long or short based on certain aspects of their surfing they want to improve or experience, which may be dictated by the type of wave they're surfing. Generally speaking, as a beginner, most likely you should be getting a board that will let you do the fundamentals well, which most importantly be able to catch waves and stand on easily. Long boards typically fit this description most, but some shortboards (say a big thick single fin or pipeline pintail) might turn worse than some modern performance long boards. A fun shape or a thick fish may be an option depending on your level of skill. Something wide and thick in the 6' to 7' range would be best. It's all about volume, types of waves you'll be riding, and having as much fun as possible. If you go too small too soon, you'll be struggling to paddle into waves and not catching anything which can be a bummer. Keep riding something big and floaty, that makes it easy to paddle out and into waves and remains stable. Try out friends' boards and other shapes to hone in on something that you like. Good Luck!

I would say stay on a board around 7ft ish until you are totally comfortable because its harder to catch waves with a shorter board compared to longer ones, I'd say gradually get shorter rather than jumping straight from a longboard to a shortboard
