  • Answer:

If you're just starting out...then a long board like that one is best. As a beginner you want to concentrate of staying up on the board and less on quick turns!! I'd continue on this board for another few months...at least until late August then possibly dropping down to something a bit smaller.

Snow boarding and skating have nothing to do with surfing, other than they also require good balance. Listen to Jason M, he gave you a good answer. I have been surfing for 43 years, and I agree with him 100%. PS Bic makes a really durable board, that is a great board for rentals. But, as a "first board" it is just too "loggy". Don't buy popouts, they are bad for the industry. http://www.mckevlins.com/nopopstory.htm However, I expect that you got that Bic because it cost less than $400.00, and sometimes you have to settle for whatever you can afford. We have all made at least one purchase like that. I also don't get a hint from your question that you ever had any kind of 'instruction', you just have "gotten good" on your own. maybe some ofthe skills that you would have developed with a couple lessons could help you adapt, even to a 6'7" Bic.

... and the shorter the board, the harder it is to catch waves. It then requires a lot more upper body to paddle the board. Of course, if you take off on the peak, all the better, but some paddling is required. ... and don't forget that after you ride you wave, you have to paddle back out into the line-up.

Okay, this is the reason why I don't like people saying, "go to the surf shop rah rah rah don't suggest boards online!" when people ask for it. Then they go to a surf shop and get a poor recommendation there. I've had this experience with surf shops before. The only surf shop where the staff actually KNOW about boards, where I live, is the Channel Islands shop. I remember I went in to the other shop once to check out firewires (only place that sells them in town) and while I was looking at the firewires the dude suggested I check out a 3 inch thick fish... Now if I was looking to buy and it was my first purchase, and someone on yahoo answers told me to "go to the surf shop and ask!" then I would have ended up with that fish. Even though I might have been looking for a standard thruster. Point is, just because they work in a surf shop doesn't mean they can make a good board recommendation. In the original askers case, I could have made a better recommendation for him online than the dude in the shop who 'hooked' him up with the popout. And yes, a BIC board is junk, it's gonna feel like that. Perhaps try a different surf shop or different person in that shop. I'd suggest getting your standard thruster shortboard. Can't go wrong with a CI, but there are tons of others out there.
