What is the best time for surfing for beginners?

  In LA your looking generally from long beach although way through the santa monica bay up to Malibu then county line. I'd say the best place to learn is where the swell is the cleanest and around knee to waist high surf. This is dependant on the weather and swell direction. For the winter I'd say anywhere from Redondo beach to El Porto would be good to learn (on smaller days that is). There is alot of room at Porto and a huge parking lot. As for beaches that you can actually rent a board I only know of the shops on pier ave in hermosa that rent. You'd be better off paying $100 at costco for a foam board. The glasses thing probably won't work, get contacts or laysic. I wear contacts when I surf. I'd imagine you'd have alot of visibility problems with goggles. I'd see your eye doctor for suggestions on goggles if thats what your into because they are gonna have to order them. Oh see John F and HB too - take a lesson.
