How hard is it to learn how to surf?

    When you learn how to surf you have to do it the right way from the start. Don't get into bad habits. Don't do what soli deo gloria said about getting on your knees. You want to pop straight up not using your knees. I too live in South Jersey (and like any other SKILLED surfer, we wont ever give up our spots) but i can tell you that New Jersey is a good place to learn because you only get shoulder high waves every once in a while. Most times you will be surfing waist high waves which is fun for anyone. Now that i am finished correcting the other people I would like to tell you to GET LESSONS. Don't be a kook. You can get lessons from a professional from a surf shop, or you can get them from a surfing and skilled family member. Please don't just rent a board and paddle out because it is a whole different world out there and I know from living here and being a local that guys will cut your head off for stupid things. There is a lot of surf etiquette to be learned and don't go out without learning it. One more thing i would like to add is that surfing isn't like ANY other sport or activity. It is unque. The feeling and the way you ride is incredible. I too snowboard and i used to skateboard and they are nothing alike. Good luck and maybe i will see you out there-AFTER you take lessons.

go to a surf camp they help you to learn and they're FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! plus you get 2 watch people fall off that suck worse than u plus they help you find a stick(board) that works for you

not hard if u have good balance when i first got up it was easy as **** but it takes a while to be able to jump in a 10 foot barrel and not kill urself

If you just take a day on a longboard and get used to the feel of it then you will be able to get up in no time after that ffirst day of getting used to the longboard. Longboards are easier to use for eginners because you catch the wave easier and their more stable.

Hi Jacob, To get up and surf a straight line wont take you more than a day to learn. Don't worry about pop ups you are not going pro just yet, there is a line in the center of the board keep your body and head and feet centered on that line keep your feet together and your toes around the leash plug. 2nd paddle out don't go towards the line up paddle, out to the side stay away from white water and close to the shoulder of the wave it will help you get out faster, when a small wave knee high to shoulder high comes your way paddle as hard and as fast as you can when the wave picks you up go to your knees ride like that for a while when you are comfortable slide your front foot up and centered on the board then go to your rear foot look ahead and not down you go where you look. have fun and see you in the line up someday.

hey i skateboard too and i have always wanted to surf. I went for the first time last summer. I rented a longboard and was pretty much on my own. I came to my feet about 3 times within 2 hours. I know you said youre pretty fit, but I would say practice pop ups at home first to build up some kinda strength and to get used to those motions.
