It is different for everyone.
everyone learns at their own pace, some people are very coordinated and will get a hang of it easy, but dont expect to master it all at once it takes time, i've been surfing for ten years and i still dont have it mastered, camps do help out alot. i mean you're surounded by learners and people who all have different styles. so you can pick and choose advice there and build you're style to you'r liking. good luck with it though, dont give up on it.

On a scale of 1-10, well it just takes practice. It is pretty difficult at first like 9/10 if you compare yourself to what pros are doing on shortboards but if you get a longboard and are content with short rides initially then 3/10. Just don't give up on it because once it clicks you will be like wow so thats how it feels. I learned by just going out and doing it. Had one lesson but learned on my own with friends who were better than me and gave me tips, starting out in smaller surf and working my way up to bigger stuff. Also sitting in the line up getting leftover waves at first then later able to jockey for waves and met people in the water. As far as boards it kinda depends on your physique although it is pretty much standard that someone in a shop will suggest a long board or mini longboard shape to start with. Here is an example of what I think would be an excellent starter board giving you something to learn to stand up on then as you get better able to maneuver around and not have to lug a gigantic long board everywhere http://www.cisurfboards.com/sb_waterhog.asp Merricks are good quality boards but there may be a local shaper where you are that makes good boards too. Typical to get around an 8 foot length or so to start but I don't know your size so let them know at the shop. I think it's very cool you live in a small town with a surf vibe. Here is a cool looking summer camp. Although I haven't been to this camp I know the area, it's around Trestles and good http://www.walkingonwater.com/camps/ cheers:)

it's not hard at all if you are not scared of water and can swim and you are pretty good shape the biggest thing need is determination and time, with those you can do it honestly i think surfers are born, if you don't get it after a few months, then it's not your thing

9 to get started, but keep at it and you'll get it! If you live in a beach town, see if some friends will paddle out with you and show you the basics. That will help you avoid all the capitalist pigs that prey on the weak and inexperienced (not to offend anyone on this board). Your reference to a beach "lifestyle" shows that you'll have the patience and dedication to program something like this into your muscle memory. Good luck and smile in the lineup!!!
It's funny that you say surfing is a lifestyle, because I've recently noticed that too. I started surfing in August. I think that how hard it is really depends on how patient you are. To me, it wasn't hard at all. I think this was because I was patient. I never expected anything major out of myself. I'm definitely not good at surfing. I don't really care though. When I surf, I focus on the feeling rather than how many waves I catch. The hard part for me is paddling out. If you get frustrated easily and expect a lot out of yourself, yeah it will be hard. No matter how hard it is, it's worth it. Trust me. If I HAD to say how hard it is, 3/10.
