    I've needed gloves numerous times for climbing and rappelling. Usually when it's cold. Almost without exception I've found that gloves minus fingertips worked best. When climbing you have to use your fingers to grip. When rappelling you can easily get gloves caught up in your rappelling devices. Either way you need the dexterity when working with your gear. You can keep your hands and fingers warm with full gloves until you are actually ready to go. Or keep hand warmers in your pockets to keep things toasty until time to go. p.s. you can buy whatever gloves that fit you well and cut the tips off...

Inexpensive rough leather gardening gloves should be fine. That's what I've used for belaying and abseiling for years. I wouldn't use them for rope handling if you get them all muddy though.
