Need help with climbing Ropes?

  • I am looking for a good rope for camping/backpacking and hiking. Can u tell me what thickness is good personolly i like the 10.5 or 11 mm thick ropes i am not climbing just what to ...show more

  • Answer:

Whoaaaaa no wayy...10.5mm or 11mm is way to thick and heavy to use as a safety rope. Today`s actual climbing ropes are no longer 10mm...the norm is now 9.8 and a bit more expensive is 9.4mm. The now make stronger ropes so 9.8 is a single climbing rope. When backpacking and needing ot short rope a person or for an emergency rappel or safety line I use a 7mm rope. Even that is a little thick I know people who use 6mm and you can still safely rappel from it, just dont take a 40foot lead climbing fall on it. I`d say a 7mm rope

A climbing rope would be unnecessarily bulky and heavy on backpacking and hiking trips. Climbing ropes are also designed to be dynamic (roughly 6% elastic). This adds considerably to the price, and it doesn't sound like you need that feature. I think you'd be better served with a length of skinny polyester utility rope/ cord, or some 7 or 8mm prussic cord if you also want to use it for rescue activities. If you're looking for a something to keep in the car, sure, get a full length 11mm rope.
