What is the best dynamic climbing rope to buy?

I just won $240 dollars at the casino, and I wanna buy rock climbing rope, what brand and length should i get?

  • looking to do mainly top roping and some sport climbing.

  • Answer:

Though it was nice of Andy to give you all that advice, my concern is that anyone who is REALLY ready to buy their own climbing rope should already know what length and type they should buy. Asking on a random forum like this for advice on a critical piece of safety equipment is really dumb. I used to sell climbing gear, and if you had come into the stores I worked at and asked a question like that I would have told you that you were not ready for your own rope. Experienced climbers know EXACTLY what they need and want, from having learned to climb with other more advanced climbers who have their own gear. EDIT: I stand by my advice. I did NOT work at REI (though I have been a member since 1972). In fact I worked for (actually managed) 3 well-respected independent climbing and mountaineering shops and also taught intro climbing and mountaineering and helped outfit several mountaineering expeditions. My "inexperienced newbie" radar goes off when I see somebody post a question like this on a forum like YA. Nothing in the OP's question indicates he has a clue what he is doing. "I won some cash and I wanna get into climbing". Anybody who is any kind of experienced climber knows what they need and want and would never ask for tips from strangers on here. If he had asked "what's a good deal on 50 meter Everdry 11mm lead rope?" I would have made suggestions, but to me this OP sounds like a disaster ready to happen. I have participated in enough involuntary rescues of fools who cratered or got hung up trying to "climb" with new ropes they had not clue how to rig or use. And I have seen people go off and die after buying gear they did not know what to do with. Just because you have money for a rope doesn't necessarily mean you should buy one. You can call me whatever names you like, but in my view YOU are irresponsible to give such advise (suggesting models) to someone when they don't seem to understand what they need. If you think you are doing this guy a service, that's your call, but don't come down on me for doing what my instincts tell me is the right thing.

Someone drank a whole bunch of haterade this morning...ckayak.Really gonna call someone dumb for asking a question? Maybe the guy was looking for Ideas and opinions on a public forum(hm, its intended use)...you don't know his life. Thanks for trolling though, making the world a better place and what not.

Let me guess - C kayak worked at REI? Any sales person that can't give coherant advice on different products needs to be in different work. Andy gave you decent advice, but honestly I don't know if there is any hard data comparing one rope brand to another respected brand. It is nice to go into a store before you get the screamer deal online. That way you can get a sense of how different ropes handle and compare different ropes. What you pay more for may just be brand name, or it may be better handling characteristics, better abrasion resistance, and a larger fall rating. I think something like 4-6 falls is about the minimum. http://outdoors.stackexchange.com/questions/508/climbing-rope-is-rated-to-x-uiaa-falls-what-is-a-uiaa-fall
