To the tourist, the top is the objective and using a guide is the fastest and safest (usually) way to the top. To a mountaineer, getting to know the mountain is the objective. Maps are studied in detail, including known or common routes to the top. The mountaineer may ultimately use an established route, or may explore an alternative. The mountaineer is O-K with a false start or backtracking from a feature beyond their expertise...now they know where not to go. When a mountaineer reaches the top, it is their (and their teams) achievement. To the tourist, its the destination. To the mountaineer, it's the journey.
