Alone Rock Climbing?

  • Answer:

Climbing alone is called 'solo'-ing. A lot of people 'free solo', which means no rope at all. What you're talking about is either lead solo or top-rope solo. In lead solo, the climber places the rope into the wall using gear (cams, nuts, etc.) as they go up. In top rope solo, the climber puts the rope up at the top first. You use your gear differently for each type, but basically, the climber will be wearing a self-locking device attached to their harness which will catch them if they fall. Edit: Lead solo and top rope solo are absolutely a thing and those are very accepted terms. They're even used on wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solo_climbing Free soloing (no gear/ropes) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_solo_climbing From the wiki - "Free solo climbing should not be confused with general free climbing, in which gear is typically used for safety in case of a fall, but not to assist the climb." 'Solo' = climbing alone, 'free' when used with SOLO means without gear, but when used with other kinds of climbing can mean anything that isn't aid climbing. You're probably looking at a picture with the belayer out of the picture. The climber could also be free soloing, which is when the climber climbs without a rope and a fall normally means death, or at least a serious injury. If they have a rope and a belayer, they're top rope or lead soloing. If they fall while top rope or lead soloing, they'll be caught by a self-locking belay device (e.g. Grigri). The reason this isn't a popular method of climbing is that the belay devices aren't meant to be used that way and you're always supposed to have your hand on the rope as a backup. However, it is fairly safe, and some people are dissuaded from it by wanting a partner or not knowing how instead of safety concerns.

Firstly lead climbing is not soloing in any sense nor is top roping. If you are trad leading with all clean (removable) pieces of gear that is called "free climbing" (usually in a big wall setting). There are devices for climbing with a rope and no belayer such as this "Silent Partner" http://www.rockexotica.com/products/belay_devices/all_solo_belay.html however, as said in the link, those types of climbs are for experts only because having two sets of eyes to check your gear is, inherently safer, maybe even twice as safe. The self locking system Kalv is talking about does work (with a Grigri or Grigri 2) however the climb you are doing will need to be far below your skill level as if you fell, the fall would be quite harsh and really bad for your rope.
