We are beginners and we are doing indoor climbing as there are no rocks in Louisiana. I wear an 8.5 street shoe and I have a wide foot. My fiance wears a 14 6E (6 wide) foot. We ...show more

Some good answers, but please note that only unlined climbing shoes will stretch. You will never get a lined shoe to stretch 1/2 size - so they have to be a more perfect fit from the start. I like the low end La Sportiva shoes for beginners - they have a lot of adjustment with the laces and seem to re-sole well. Don't buy any of the high end shoes with a lot of hook / shape built into the shoe - these are less comfortable, less adjustable, and made more for experts. Good Luck

If it was me i would buy Scarpa vantage, these rock shoes are better for the wider footed people. and give a very height level of performance.

I bought Mythos for my first shoes, and they were great for a beginner because they weren't too terribly painful, and they stretch a little to fit the foot, if you are worried about them being too narrow. I did end up getting new shoes before I wore those out because I wanted something a little better for more advanced outdoor climbs....but I still love my Mythos...super comfy and easy to fit for climbing shoes. REI carries them...and probably Moosejaw and Backcounty....all have good return policies.

Hmm that makes things pretty difficult if you can't try them on beforehand. It's pretty difficult to know what will fit right for you, and in which size. So if you've got a bit of cash to spare, buy a whole load from a website and return the ones you don't want (they have to accept them under distance selling regulations), as long as you haven't used them on a wall. Try them on and stand on some little edges, maybe on your doorstep or so to get a feel. Cheaper shoes are a lot more comfortable and forgiving for newbies, such as the Boreal Joker or the Red Chili Spirit, and they get tighter and more aggressive with price, for harder climbers. More expensive shoes also tend to have softer rubber - more friction but doesn't last as long. You might like to go down half a size or a whole size - expert climbers go down many sizes but that really hurts.. I don't know why you say 'obviously we will go for a lace up' for your fiancé, velcros should be able to accomodate just as well...
