Are the north face backpacks any good?

Which is better north face backpacks or mountain hardware backpacks?

  • Answer:

Over the last 5-10 years, the North Face has really fallen out of favor with many climbers/backpackers...they're equipment & clothing is not as high quality for outdoors purposes as it used to be. They seem to be all about the outdoors fashion market, where they can sell overpriced North Face clothes to hippies and spoiled rich kids to wear to school and to hang out at the ski resort. I have many pieces of equipment and clothing from Mountain Hardwear and have never been disappointed. If you are worried about looking stylish, get a NF pack...if you are worried about quality and performance, go with the Mountain Hardwear (assuming both packs fit you well, which is most important).

I haven't used either brands packs, though on the other pieces of gear I've gotten I've been very impressed with Mountain Hardware's quality. I don't climb much, I'm more of a scrambler and hiker. Someone bought me a Millet technical pack that I've fallen in love with. Very low profile off my back, very stable and carries a load really well. I've been told their other climbing packs also perform very well.

They are both good quality packs. Get what fits you. Your back and shoulders holding it, your legs doing the walking. My shoes and walking boots fit me. My pack fits me too. Try some on. If it fits your own shoulders, your back length, sits OK on your own self, not somebody else, carries with comfort, has the style and usability you want and it's made well, it doesn't matter what name is on it. No point carrying a brand name for show. Carry the pack and what's in it with comfort. It works best that way. I've trekked on five continents, 23 countries, and names are the last thing to worry about. Comfort and usability are the things that matter. Get gear that suits yourself, not what somebody else says suits them. Have some great times. Here's one for a girl. What does she want? A name or a pack? Same advice...get what fits. North Face for fashion, or it might be the one anyway, without style having any place in it. Only you can know what feels right on you. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AicuysUs3sArqdh.DidYk43sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100712185113AA2V1eq&show=7#profile-info-FFusgBrKaa . . . . . . .

ckayak and cody are right about TNF. They've pretty much sold out. On the other hand, Mountain HardWARE sold out too, and became Mountain HardWEAR. They are also primarily a lifestyle clothing company now that pursues brand image. I'd look to the Arc'Teryx Bora series for a large backpack. The Gregory and Ospreys are nice, and Black Diamond is really starting to put out some nice products too that are specialized towards skiiers and climbers. If it's a climbing pack you want I'd really look hard at BD. Ultimately, It depends on what you will use it for of course. I'd go check out the reviews at backpacker.com so you can line them up next to each other and compare them. Narrow it down to a few that you like and head out to REI or EMS and try them out in person.
