Answer:
Well socks don't need to be worn generally but to each his (or her) own I guess. At first its best to have shoes that fit comfortable so you don't end up hating the sport. The may also be the best for you if you are just a casual climber and aren't too serious about it. However, if you want to get more serious about the sport, you may want to think about going down a size. The people that do this are those that push beyond the pain. Usually when you climb you have adrenaline and endorphins coursing through you so you generally don't feel pain ( bumps, scrapes etc. good luck finding the perfect pair

First off dont wear socks with your climbing shoes..it`ll make a huge difference in your climbing performance. Try going to the gym without socks then decide based off of that. If the climbing shoe is comfortable its too big, if it hurts its too small, if its uncomfortable then you found the right size. Keep in mind leather shoes will stretch to form to you foot a bit. So if it hurts just a little it should stretch to the perfect fit. Wear them in the shower to break them in very quickly

Well, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. The first is that your gym's shoes are used and have been broken in (I assume). Now, a well made shoe shouldn't stretch all that much, but the fact is, a lot of them do. So if you tried on a pair of new size 10s, they would likely feel tighter than what you are used to. That being said, if you get your shoes (whatever size) and they feel painfully tight, they may not be too small. When I first got mine, for the first little while I had to take them off after a couple of climbs to give my feet some relief. But now they fit perfectly! Another thing to think about is whether the shoes you'll be buying are made by a different manufacturer than the shoes you normally wear. Different brands can often size slightly differently. Is there anywhere nearby where you could buy some shoes, instead of online? It'd obviously be much easier to get the proper size that way. If price is your main concern, and anywhere you could buy shoes in person would be too expensive, you could also go in to check out how your foot fits a particular shoe, and then order it online. Good luck.

What size? For your first pair you should start by trying on a half dozen different shoes to figure out what brands and models best fit the shape of your foot. Go to your climbing gym, the local REI, or any other place where they have a good selection and talk with the sales person. Do you have a high arch, a small heel, etc? These things matter. E.g. the brand Five Ten is usually a good choice if you have a wide foot. You also want to avoid specific designs. You don't want anything too advanced, for example: super arched, asymmetrical shoes are worse than useless for beginning/ intermediate climbers. So first narrow things down to two or three suitable models before you worry about fine tuning the size... they should be slightly uncomfortable but not painful. Socks? Generally not. Not unless with funky rentals or when climbing outdoors in the dead of winter. Or unless you're that grizzly old dude who walked up to us at Fontainebleau with socks in his climbing shoes and cranked out some 7's as warm-ups. And if you're that guy, do you have plans for this weekend? Just spend some extra time & money when getting your first pair. It'll make a big difference in terms of both comfort and performance. After that you can always order the next few pairs online. (Depending on how often you climb and how clean your technique is, you can expect to shred your climbing shoes in a matter of months.) P.S. I noticed you rarely vote for best answers. Please start doing that - you've received several good answers here as well as for your other questions, and we all appreciate the feedback :-)

9.5s are probably good, but keep in mind that they will stretch out, a lot. mine fit perfectly when i got them, but not anymore.
