What are good tent camping locations in the Midwest?

Unofficial camping near boulder co?

  • Hey so I'm looking for some unofficial camping locations within about 30-45min of boulder colorado. what I mean by this is I don't want to set up my tent alongside others and ...show more

  • Answer:

There is a place called "Rainbow Lakes" that is in between Nederland and Ward. Not too far of a drive. There is an official campground at the end of the road but there are several, better unofficial spots along the road to the campground that are right along a small river. Much more spread out and private. You can also park your car several places along the road and walk in. I would recommend crossing the river (South side of the road) and going that direction if you plan on walking in... more secluded and a ton of space. Have fun!

My usual advice is to Google the region using orbital photography and maps of Yahoo. Zoom down to look for places like abandoned railroad spur, inactive quarry, mill ruins and the like. Look for off-road vehicle tracks to indicate free-wheeling public usage. Stay out of flood zones; flash-flooding comes at you fast.
