It's very rare I'm camping on an organised site. All over Britain I've had some great stays in a little Vango mountain tent or one of my Colemans, both excellent...the Viper and the Raid. On mountains and moorland, in the woods and on the beaches, there are a hundred places that could be favourite if I bothered with favourites. Some are simply unforgettable, either from the state of the weather when I was there ...haha, what fun we have on a cold blowy pouring wet day in the hills....or the view, or simply the sense of peace and space around me, that quiet 'knowing you're alive' feeling of simply enjoying and knowing where you are. From the top of Helvellyn or on the wide expanse of the beautiful but dangerous Rannoch Moor with it's black holes of stinking death where sometimes a deer carcass can be seen after an animal missed seeing a deep one, to wake and cook breakfast in the wilderness is a joy. On the Lakeland Fells, the North York Moors, in Derbyshire on lovely Kinder or on Haystacks, or by Tryfan and the Glyders the spirit of Snowdonia, and in Dartmoor and Exmoor, Bodmin and the gentler hills of Purbeck and the Chilterns, life in Britain as a camper and walker, or cycle camping, is very good. Some countries have higher hills and some have almost none. The Dutch Alps were a lazy walk one morning, and in lovely Slovenia you get the best of both worlds...the glorious Julian Alps and the lowland resorts with some of the pretiest little coastal towns and villages I've seen anywhere. But here in Britain we still have a lot of good country for hill walkers, beach fans, and those who like gentle walks along the rivers and fields close to home. Can't knock it for scenery and good camping , this little group of islands we have. It's a little gem.
